Trefoil Solitaire

Trefoil Solitaire

Trefoil Solitaire is a single player card game, where the four aces are removed from the deck and used as the start of the four foundations. The remaining 48 cards are dealt into 16 piles of 3 cards each. Only the top card in each of these piles may be moved. The piles may be built down by suit, and the foundations must be built up by suit. When a player gets stuck, he is allowed to shuffle and redeal all of the cards not currently in the foundations up to three times. When all the cards have been removed from a pile, that space can not be filled with any card. In Trefoil Solitaire, once a pile is gone, it is gone for good. To win, the player must move all 52 cards to the foundations.

How to play Trefoil Solitaire

Game Basics - The Deal

Trefoil, similar to Forty Thieves Solitaire, is a challenging solitaire game using a standard 52-card deck. The 4 Aces start out in the foundation piles. The remainder of the cards is dealt into 16 piles of 3 cards each. There is no reserve holding area.

Game Play

The foundation piles are built in ascending order from Ace to King by suit. Only the top card in the stock piles can be moved either to the foundation area or to other piles. When a pile is emptied it is gone for good; it cannot be filled with other cards.

Cards can be placed only on cards of the same suit and in descending order. For example, the Queen of Clubs must be played on the King of Clubs. The game is won by moving all cards to the foundation resulting in 4 completed 13 card sets by suit.

Strategies and Tips

If a player runs out of options, the "shuffle" button can be clicked and all cards not in the foundations will be reshuffled and dealt again into new piles. This can be done up to 3 times per game.

It is important to note that a card that will play on a foundation should be moved there at every opportunity. If the card will play on one of the foundation piles, it has no use in the stock pile area anyway.
